Nestled along Sri Lanka’s golden north-western coastline, St. Anne’s Church, Thalawila is one of the
island’s most historic and spiritually significant Catholic shrines. Surrounded by swaying coconut palms
and overlooking the tranquil Indian Ocean, the church is a serene retreat that combines deep devotion,
history, and natural beauty in one unforgettable destination.
For centuries, pilgrims from every corner of Sri Lanka — and beyond — have travelled here to pray,
reflect, and celebrate the miracles attributed to St. Anne. Whether you’re a believer or simply a traveler
searching for peaceful scenery, Thalawila offers a unique mix of spirituality and coastal charm.
A Brief History:
Legend tells of a Portuguese trader who, in the 17th century, found a mysterious statue of St. Anne
washed ashore while sailing through the Puttalam coast. Believing it to be a divine sign, he built a small
chapel on the spot where he discovered the statue.
Over time, this humble chapel evolved into one of Sri Lanka’s most beloved Catholic churches, drawing
thousands of devotees each year. Today, St. Anne’s Church stands as a symbol of faith, miracles, and
unity — visited by Catholics, Buddhists, and Hindus alike, all seeking blessings and peace.
