Menik Vehera

Nestled within the tranquil ruins of Polonnaruwa, Menik Vehera is a peaceful and lesser-visited stupa that offers travelers a quiet escape into Sri Lanka’s Buddhist heritage. The name “Menik Vehera” translates to “Gem Stupa,” reflecting its spiritual purity and precious value in the hearts of ancient devotees. Though smaller than Rankoth or Kiri Vehera, this stupa holds immense historical and religious significance as part of the Alahana Parivena Monastic Complex, where monks once lived, meditated, and studied the Dhamma.

History & Architecture:
Built around the 12th century, Menik Vehera is believed to have been restored several times over the centuries. The stupa’s structure includes a square terrace with steps on all four sides, surrounded by the remains of image houses, meditation cells, and residential quarters used by monks.
