Standing tall in the heart of the ancient city, Rankoth Vehera (also spelled Ruwanweli Stupa of Polonnaruwa) is one of Sri Lanka’s grandest Buddhist stupas. Built by King Nissanka Malla in the 12th century, this colossal monument reflects both royal devotion and architectural mastery from the island’s golden era.

The Story Behind Rankoth Vehera:
The name “Rankoth Vehera” translates to “Gold Pinnacled Stupa.” Rising over 54 meters in height, it is the fourth tallest stupa in Sri Lanka, symbolizing spiritual enlightenment and peace. The surrounding monastery complex once hosted thousands of monks, serving as a key center for learning and worship during Polonnaruwa’s reign as the capital. Even after centuries, the brick dome still stands proudly, reminding visitors of the faith and skill of ancient Sri Lankan builders.
