Kiri Vehera Stupa

(0)
Gleaming pure white against the blue skies of Polonnaruwa, Kiri Vehera Stupa is one of the most beautiful and well-preserved stupas in Sri Lanka’s ancient city. Its name, “Kiri Vehera”, means “Milk White Stupa”, reflecting both its bright color and spiritual purity. This sacred monument is believed to have been built by Queen Subhadra, the wife of King Parakramabahu the Great, in the 12th century. For more than 900 years, it has stood as a symbol of devotion and faith.

The History & Significance:
Kiri Vehera forms part of the Alahana Parivena monastery complex, which served as a major Buddhist learning center during Polonnaruwa’s golden era. The stupa’s perfect dome shape and calm surroundings create an atmosphere of peace — it’s a favorite spot for both pilgrims and travelers seeking serenity. Remarkably, much of its original plaster still survives, giving it the authentic look of an untouched relic from the past.
