Onsenji Temple

Onsenji Temple is one of the most important cultural landmarks in Kinosaki Onsen. Located halfway up Mount Daishi, this historic temple is closely tied to the origins of Kinosaki’s hot spring culture. According to legend, a Buddhist monk named Dochi Shonin prayed here for 1,000 days, blessing the town with healing hot spring waters. The temple complex features ancient wooden halls, stone steps, traditional gates, and peaceful forest trails. Visitors come to Onsenji not only for spiritual reasons but also to enjoy its tranquil nature setting and panoramic views of the surrounding mountains.

What to See & Do

  • 🏯 Step inside the **Main Hall (Hondo)**, a Muromachi-period wooden masterpiece and National Cultural Property ⛩️

  • 🏺 Explore the **Kinosaki Art Museum** (Treasure House) to see ancient canes left behind by those healed by the waters 📜

How to Get There
