Shurijo Castle is one of Okinawa’s most iconic historical sites, rebuilt after wartime destruction. It reflects the unique Ryukyu Kingdom architecture and offers panoramic views of Naha.

What to See & Do

  • 🏯 Witness the Seiden Reconstruction, a unique opportunity to see master craftsmen rebuilding the iconic red main hall. 🛠️
  • ⛩️ Walk through the Shureimon Gate, the famous symbol of Okinawan hospitality featured on the 2,000 yen note. 💵
  • 🔭 Head to the Iri-no-Azana lookout for breathtaking panoramic views of Naha and the sparkling Kerama Islands. 🌊
  • 📜 Explore the Una Plaza and various historic courtyards once used for grand royal ceremonies and envoys. 🏛️
  • 🧱 Admire the Kurumamon Gate and the undulating limestone walls that showcase unique Ryukyu masonry. ✨

How to Get There

  • 🚝 Take the Yui Rail monorail to Shuri Station; it is a scenic 15-minute walk through a historic neighborhood to the park. 🏁
  • 🚌 Board a City Bus (Routes 1, 7, or 8) which stops directly at the “Shurijo-mae” bus stop near the entrance. 📍
  • 🚕 Hire a Taxi for a convenient 10-minute ride from the central Kokusai Street area. 🚖
  • 🚗 Use the Suimui-kan basement parking if driving, though spaces can fill up early on weekends. 🅿️

Travel Tips

  • 👟 Wear comfortable walking shoes as the grounds are expansive and feature many stone stairs and slopes. 🥾
  • 🗓️ Visit on weekdays or right at opening time (8:30 AM) to experience the site before the tour groups arrive. 🕊️
  • ☀️ Bring water and sun protection—the high elevation and stone courtyards can become very hot in the Okinawan sun. 👒
  • 🛑 Respect the protected cultural zones and stay behind the ropes in areas where reconstruction is actively taking place. 🏗️
