Shikinaen Garden

0
(0)
Shikinaen Garden was built as a royal villa for the Ryukyu kings. The garden features a large central pond, stone bridges, traditional wooden buildings, and walking paths designed for relaxation and contemplation. It is one of Okinawa’s most culturally significant and picturesque locations.

What to See & Do

  • 🏰 Tour the Udun Palace, a meticulously restored 15-room wooden residence with iconic Ryukyu red-tiled roofs. 🏮
  • 🌉 Cross the arched stone bridges crafted from local Ryukyu limestone, reflecting a beautiful fusion of Chinese and Okinawan design. 🏛️
  • 🐢 Spot the Rokkaku-do, a charming hexagonal Chinese-style pavilion set on a small island in the center of the “Heart” (Shinji-ike) pond. ⛲
  • 🔭 Visit the Kankodai observatory for a panoramic view of southern Naha, designed to hide the ocean from Chinese envoys to make the island seem larger. 📜
  • 🌿 Stroll along the winding stone paths (S-shaped to ward off straight-moving spirits) through a mix of tropical and seasonal flora. 🌺

How to Get There

  • 🚌 By Bus: Take Naha Bus lines 2, 5, or 14 from central Naha (Kokusai Street/Asahibashi) to the “Shikinaen-mae” stop (approx. 20 mins). 🏁
  • 🚕 By Taxi: A 10–15 minute ride from downtown Naha; highly recommended for convenience as it is not near a monorail station. 🚖
  • 🚗 By Car: Free on-site parking is available for approximately 50 vehicles. 🅿️

Travel Tips

  • 🕒 Hours & Fees: Open 9:00 AM – 5:30 PM (Oct–Mar). Last admission is 5:00 PM. Admission is 400 yen for adults. 🎫
  • 📅 Closures: The garden is closed on Wednesdays (or the following day if Wednesday is a holiday). 🚫
  • 👟 Footwear: Paths are made of uneven limestone and can be very slippery when wet; wear sturdy walking shoes. 🥾
  • 🍱 Etiquette: Eating and drinking (except water) are prohibited within the garden to protect the World Heritage site. 💧
