Ninenzaka & Sannenzaka

0
(0)
Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka are two of Kyoto’s most charming and beautifully preserved pedestrian streets. These sloped stone pathways are lined with traditional wooden machiya houses, tea shops, artisan boutiques, cafés, and souvenir stores. They offer an authentic glimpse into old Kyoto and are among the most photogenic areas in the Higashiyama district.

What to See & Do

  • 🏮 Wander through Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka, two perfectly preserved stone-paved slopes lined with traditional Edo-period wooden machiya houses ⛩️ ✨
  • ☕ Visit the Starbucks Coffee Kyoto Ninenzaka Yasaka Chaya, the world’s first Starbucks set in a 100-year-old townhouse featuring traditional tatami floor seating 🍵 🧘
  • 📸 Capture the iconic “Hokan-ji Temple” (Yasaka Pagoda) view from the intersection of Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka for the ultimate Kyoto postcard shot 🤳 🎞️
  • 🛍️ Browse boutique shops for authentic Kiyomizu-ware pottery, incense, and handcrafted Japanese umbrellas (wagasa) that have been sold here for generations 🌂 🏺
  • 🍦 Sample local street food delicacies such as “Kyo-Baam” matcha baumkuchen, Mitarashi dango (rice dumplings), and Kyoto-style cucumber pickles 🍡 😋

How to Get There

  • 🚌 Board Kyoto City Bus 206 or 100 from Kyoto Station to the ‘Kiyomizu-michi’ stop; from there, it is a five-minute walk east toward the slopes 🚏 🚍
  • 🚇 Take the Keihan Line to Kiyomizu-Gojo Station or Gion-Shijo Station; both are roughly a 15–20 minute scenic walk through the historic Higashiyama district 🚶 🗺️
  • 🚕 Hire a taxi for a 20-minute ride from Kyoto Station (approx. 2,000 yen); ask to be dropped at “Kodai-ji South Gate” to avoid the steepest hills 🚗 🏁
  • 👣 Walk directly from Kiyomizu-dera Temple by following the stone steps downward into Sannenzaka, then continuing north toward Ninenzaka 🚶 🗺️

Travel Tips

  • 🕒 Arrive before 7:30 AM to enjoy the streets without the massive midday crowds and to capture the soft morning light on the wooden facades 🌅 📸
  • 🛑 Respect Photography Rules: While main streets are public, many side alleys are private. Observe the signage—unauthorized commercial photography may incur a 10,000 yen fine 🛑 🤳
  • 👟 Wear comfortable shoes with good grip; the historic stone steps are uneven and can become surprisingly slippery during rain or light winter snow 👣 🧘
  • 📅 2026 Sakura Forecast: Cherry blossoms in this area are expected to begin on **March 29, 2026**, with full bloom around **April 6, 2026** 🌸 🏮

Suggested Itinerary

  • 7:00 AM – Begin at the top of Sannenzaka for a peaceful view of the district before the shops open and the crowds arrive.
