Kiyomizu-dera Temple

Kiyomizu-dera Temple, located in the Higashiyama district, is one of Kyoto’s most celebrated cultural treasures and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Founded in 780 AD, the temple is famous for its large wooden stage that provides sweeping views of Kyoto, especially stunning during cherry blossom and autumn foliage seasons. With sacred halls, forested walking paths, and traditional streets nearby, Kiyomizu-dera is a must-visit destination for anyone exploring Kyoto.

What to See & Do

  • ⛩️ Step onto the iconic Kiyomizu Stage, a massive wooden platform standing 13 meters high, built without a single nail to offer sweeping panoramic views of Kyoto ✨ 🏛️
  • 🍁 Witness the vibrant seasonal shifts, from over 1,000 cherry trees in spring to fiery Japanese maples that blanket the hillside in late autumn 🌸 📸
  • 💧 Drink from the three distinct streams of the Otowa Waterfall, where each flow is said to grant a different wish: longevity, success at school, or a fortunate love life 🌊 🧘
  • 🏯 Marvel at the Three-Storied Pagoda (Sanju-no-to), one of the tallest in Japan, recently restored to its brilliant vermilion glory and perfect for photography 🗼 🎞️
  • 🌙 Experience the Special Night Viewings held three times a year, when a blue beam of light (the Kannon’s Mercy) shines over the illuminated temple grounds 🌙 🕯️

How to Get There

  • 🚌 Board Kyoto City Bus 206 or 100 from Kyoto Station to the ‘Kiyomizu-michi’ or ‘Gojo-zaka’ stop; expect a scenic 10-minute uphill walk through bustling shop-lined streets 🚏 🚍
  • 🚇 Take the Keihan Electric Railway to Kiyomizu-Gojo Station and enjoy a 20-minute walk through the historic district to reach the temple’s main Niomon Gate 🚶 🗺️
  • 🚕 Hire a taxi from central Kyoto or Kyoto Station for a 15–20 minute journey (approx. 1,800–2,200 yen); note that taxis can only drop you at the base of the pedestrian hills 🚗 🏁

Travel Tips

  • 🕒 Arrive at 6:00 AM to witness the sunrise over the city and enjoy the grounds before the large tour groups and school trips arrive at 9:00 AM 🌅 🕊️
  • 👟 Wear sturdy walking shoes as the approach involves steep historic slopes (Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka) and the temple grounds feature uneven stone paths 👣 🧘
  • 💴 Prepare for the 2025 Admission Fees: 500 yen for adults and 200 yen for children. Please note that the ticket booth is Cash Only 💰 🎫
  • 📅 Mark your calendar for the 2026 Seiryu-e (Blue Dragon) Festivals in March, April, and September to see a 18-meter dragon paraded through the temple 🐉 🏮

Suggested Itinerary

  • 7:00 AM – Arrive at the temple gates to beat the crowds and walk through the vermilion Nio-mon Gate toward the Main Hall.
  • 7:30 AM – Walk across the Kiyomizu Stage and head to the Okunoin Hall balcony for the famous “postcard view” of the stage against the Kyoto skyline.
